The story is a pulp noir tale where the spirit of author Mary Shelley, after her death, attempts to tell a new story by possessing Ida, a woman in 1936 Chicago. While possessed, Ida reveals the criminal activities of mob boss Lupino, leading to her discreet murder by Lupino's henchmen, Clyde and James.
Elsewhere in the city, Frankenstein's monster, now calling himself "Frank," seeks out scientist Dr. Cornelia Euphronius. Frank, having read her work on reanimation, asks her to create a companion for him after a century of solitude. They choose Ida's corpse and successfully revive her, though the process causes amnesia. Frank deceives the revived woman, whom he calls the "Bride," into believing she is his companion who lost her memory in an accident. She accepts this new reality.

Frank and the Bride begin a life on the run. After enjoying a movie featuring Frank's favorite actor, Ronnie Reed, and dancing at a club, Frank kills two men who harass the Bride. They decide to live as outlaws, stowing away on a train headed for New York City and killing a security officer who discovers them in Indiana. Meanwhile, Detective Jake Wiles and his assistant Myrna Malloy investigate the mounting body count and pursue the couple to New York.
In New York, the couple's chaos continues at a screening of Revolt of the Zombies. They seek refuge from the police and an angry mob at a high-class party, where Frank meets and is dismissed by Ronnie Reed. Detective Wiles arrives with the police, but the chase is briefly halted when the Bride holds Reed at gunpoint. Wiles realizes her true identity as Ida. The couple escapes the city by killing a police officer and hot-wiring a car.

Their crime spree becomes publicized, and Lupino recognizes the Bride in a newspaper. He executes James for failing to silence her and sends Clyde to finish the job. Concurrently, Malloy connects the couple's murder reports and sightings to cities where Reed's films were set. This clue leads her and Wiles to Niagara Falls, where they find Frank proposing to the Bride. Wiles confronts the Bride, revealing her true identity as Ida, and she injures him in response. As they flee, Frank confesses his initial deception, clarifying that he didn't know who she was before her death. The Bride forgives him.
Wiles explains to Malloy that he and Ida were working together to bring down Lupino, expressing guilt over his inaction leading to her murder. He decides to retire, promoting Malloy to replace him. Malloy tracks Frank and the Bride to a drive-in theater in Illinois. At the same moment, Clyde arrives and fatally shoots Frank in the head. The Bride escapes with Frank's body, unknowingly being followed by Malloy, and returns to Dr. Euphronius’s laboratory. Euphronius declares she cannot revive Frank. Clyde breaks into the lab and fatally shoots the Bride before leaving.
