Plot Synopsis

Ulysses arrives in the small town of Normal, Minnesota, in the dead of winter, stepping in as interim sheriff after the previous one’s sudden death. At first, everything feels almost too easy—he gets along well with his deputies, chats comfortably with locals and shop owners, and even receives an offer from the mayor to stay on permanently. It seems like a fresh start. But that illusion doesn’t last long.

Just a few days into the job, a bank robbery pulls him into his first real test. When Ulysses walks into the bank to negotiate, things take a sharp turn—his own deputies open fire on him. It becomes instantly clear that something is deeply wrong with the town’s law enforcement. Inside the bank, he stumbles onto something much bigger than a simple robbery: a hidden stash of cash, gold, and military-grade weapons, all tied to a Yakuza-run operation.

Instead of arresting the robbers, Lori and Keith, Ulysses realizes they’ve accidentally uncovered the same dangerous secret he has. Seeing the bigger picture, he teams up with them. Together, they arm themselves with the weapons from the vault and fight their way out of the bank.

What follows is chaos. As they move down the town’s main street, Ulysses finds himself in violent confrontations with the very people he had just met—neighbors, shopkeepers, seemingly ordinary residents. The town reveals its true nature, and many lives are lost as the trio tries to escape.

Meanwhile, a Yakuza operative posing as a bank security guard sends out a warning. Back in Japan, that message sets things in motion—Yakuza members board a private jet and head straight for Normal.

Lori and Keith manage to escape on a snowplow, leaving Ulysses behind. He makes his way back to the sheriff’s office, only to be cornered by Moira, a resident he had befriended just the day before. Before she can kill him, Alex—the late sheriff’s adult child—steps in and shoots her. Ulysses quickly deputizes Alex, and the two join forces.

Realizing what’s coming, Ulysses has Alex plant C-4 in the bank vault. He uses it as leverage to force a tense agreement between himself, the remaining townspeople, the corrupt deputies, and the Yakuza guard. With a blizzard cutting off power and communication, no one can call for help. They’re stuck together, forced into an uneasy alliance. The plan is simple: defend the town from the incoming Yakuza and cover everything up by staging the bank incident as a car accident.

When the Yakuza finally arrive, they inspect the bank and seem satisfied with the explanation. Believing everything is under control, they join the others for a celebratory dinner. For a brief moment, it feels like the danger has passed.

Then, in a bizarre twist, a loaded shotgun mounted on the wall accidentally falls and fires, killing one of the Yakuza leaders. The room explodes into violence. What follows is a brutal, chaotic fight that leaves almost everyone dead—including all of the Yakuza.

In the end, only Ulysses and Alex survive. The film closes with the two of them in Texas, working side by side in another temporary sheriff assignment, as if this strange, violent chapter was just one stop along the way.
