Linda Liddle, a timid corporate strategist, was anticipating a long-promised promotion from her former boss. However, upon becoming CEO of the family's financial management company, the boss's son, Bradley Preston, instead gave the position to his college friend, Donovan. Bradley, repulsed by Linda's "boorish manner, lack of self-confidence, and unattractive appearance," intended to transfer her to a dead-end job.

When Linda challenged his decision, Bradley insisted she join him, Donovan, and two other executives on a business trip to Bangkok to finalize a merger. During the flight, as a storm hit, Donovan ridiculed Linda by showing a clumsy audition tape she had made for the show Survivor, which ironically highlighted her extensive survival skills. Engine failure caused the plane to lose altitude. In a panic, Donovan tried to strangle Linda with her seat belt, but she stabbed him in self-defense. The plane crashed into the sea and sank.

The next morning, Linda awoke on a remote island in the Gulf of Thailand, the sole survivor other than Bradley, who had a sprained ankle. Linda established a shelter and secured food and water, which Bradley grudgingly accepted while continuing to issue orders. In response, Linda abandoned him for two days, leaving him immobile, exposed to the elements, and without water. Just as he was collapsing from thirst, she returned to rehydrate him. Despite this, Bradley remained defiant and attempted to build his own camp, but failed. Finally swallowing his pride, he submitted to Linda's command. Linda spotted a boat offshore but chose to ignore it, preferring to remain on the island.

Linda grew stronger, more attractive, and more confident as she imparted survival skills to Bradley. One night, while sharing homemade alcohol, a drunken Linda confessed to Bradley that she had been married to an abusive man whom she allowed to drive drunk, resulting in his death. Seemingly touched, Bradley offered to cook dinner, but secretly spiked the food with poisonous berries and tried to escape on a makeshift raft, intending to leave Linda to die. The raft was destroyed by waves, and Linda, having survived his miscalculated poison dose, rescued him.
