Twenty years since her days as an assistant at Runway magazine, Andrea "Andy" Sachs has established herself as a prominent New York reporter. Her career takes a sudden turn, however, when her entire newsroom receives text messages announcing their immediate layoff during an awards ceremony.

Andy manages to secure a new role under her former employer, Miranda Priestly. Miranda is currently grappling with a scandal involving a positive feature on a brand linked to sweatshop labor. In an effort to restore the magazine's prestige, Miranda's superior, Irv, mandates that she appoint Andy as the features editor—a decision Miranda meets with clear resentment.

Struggling with the evolution of modern fashion media, a notably listless Miranda finds her trademark imperiousness softened by various HR complaints, though some of her notorious office habits persist. Nigel, her trusted associate, points out the harsh reality: the print edition of Runway has lost its readership.

Financial pressures force the once-exacting Miranda to pivot toward low-cost short-form content and online clickbait. While Andy continues to produce high-quality journalism, her work fails to find an audience. In her personal life, Andy begins dating a new boyfriend named Peter.

In the wake of the labor scandal, Miranda attempts to salvage relationships with vital advertisers like Dior. It is there that Andy encounters her former colleague, Emily. During a difficult negotiation, Andy observes a palpable friction between Miranda and Emily, whose company has adopted a strategy of hiking prices and alienating the middle class.

Andy bolsters her professional standing by securing a high-profile interview with wealthy Silicon Valley divorcee Sasha Barnes. Though Irv intended to elevate Miranda to lead global content for the entire media group, he passes away before the promotion is finalized.

Irv’s son, Jay, lacks his father's devotion to Runway and halts Miranda's advancement, opting instead for management consultants and aggressive cost-cutting measures. To Andy's amazement, Miranda stoically accepts new realities like flying economy class. Meanwhile, Andy's anxiety over her job security leads her to insult Peter's profession, straining their relationship.

During Milan Fashion Week, Nigel organizes a massive, potentially final gala for Runway featuring Lady Gaga.
