Plot Synopsis

Five years after the Clarke comet struck, Earth remains a desolate world. Constant radiation storms plague the surface, and comet fragments relentlessly rain down through the atmosphere. The Garrity family—John, Allison, and their son Nathan—have survived by retreating beneath the ice of Greenland, where they endure a harsh, sunless life in a colossal underground bunker.

Allison, a member of the governing committee, is constantly torn between the ethical demands of compassion and the necessary measures for the bunker's survival, given the critical shortage of resources. The harsh truth is steadily becoming clear: the air outside is increasingly toxic, earthquakes are compromising the structure, and vital reserves are nearly depleted. What was meant to be a sanctuary is rapidly turning into a tomb.

A glimmer of hope appears as scientists speculate that the comet's impact crater in southern France might harbor a safe haven with clean air and water. This discovery forces a terrible choice: remain in the bunker or risk a dangerous trek across a ruined world to reach the crater. Before they can decide, a catastrophic earthquake collapses the bunker, violently taking the choice from them. Amidst the pandemonium, the Garritys and a handful of survivors manage to flee to the surface on a small rescue vessel, narrowly escaping a colossal tsunami.

Their vessel, almost out of fuel and drifting, finally reaches the United Kingdom. They landed in the submerged, ruined city of Liverpool—a hauntingly beautiful ghost city. Moving inland, they encountered a desperate new humanity in the shattered neighborhoods: scavengers, their survival necessitating a life of violence.

Securing passage toward London, they face the treacherous crossing of the former English Channel—a decaying bridge of ropes and platforms suspended over a chasm. Along the way, the Garritys cross paths with fellow survivors, some offering kindness and aid, others driven by brutal hunger.

Near London, they meet Denis, a French survivor who confirms the existence of the crater and begs them to take his daughter, Camille. For Nathan, Camille's presence introduces a fragile possibility of a future beyond survival.

As they continue, a new, tentative family forms within their ranks. Yet, the world remains hostile, plagued by radiation pockets, sudden violent storms, and falling comet debris. Closer to southern France, signs of war emerge—armed factions battling over essential resources and the promise of the crater. The destination is real, but so is the bloodshed surrounding it, making access synonymous with conflict.

The journey culminates in a final, explosive confrontation at the edge of the impact zone. With alliances shattered, John is forced to make decisions that will determine the kind of world—and family—that survives. For Nathan, the stakes are elevated by his bond with Camille, turning survival into a fight for the preservation of humanity itself.

In the end, the Garritys and their companions stand at the crater's threshold. Before them lies the unknown—dangerous, fragile, and teeming with possibility—the chance to begin again.
