The film opens in southern England in June 1944, where the largest invasion force in history stands ready to launch Operation Overlord. Hundreds of thousands of Allied troops, supported by thousands of ships and aircraft, await the order to cross the English Channel. Years of planning have led to this moment, but success depends on factors no commander can control: the tides, the moon, and above all, the weather.

At the center of the crisis is James Stagg, a quiet but brilliant meteorologist tasked with coordinating Allied weather forecasts. Unlike the military leaders around him, Stagg is a scientist uncomfortable with politics and the enormous responsibility placed upon him. His challenge is compounded by conflicting forecasts from Allied weather teams.
As Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower weighs his options, meteorologists reach sharply different conclusions. American forecaster Irving Krick predicts favorable conditions, while Stagg warns that powerful storms are heading toward the English Channel. If he is right, rough seas and poor visibility could doom the invasion before it begins.

Stagg's warnings divide Allied headquarters and place him at the center of intense debates. Much of the film unfolds through tense strategy meetings, where weather reports become battles of judgment and leadership. Eisenhower, already haunted by previous setbacks, repeatedly seeks certainty from Stagg, but certainty is impossible. With no satellites, radar networks, or computer models, forecasting remains an inexact science.
As pressure mounts, Eisenhower's aide Kay Summersby provides a human perspective on the burden carried by the Allied commander. Meanwhile, the weather deteriorates exactly as Stagg predicted. The planned invasion is postponed, creating a new crisis. Troops are already mobilized, ships are loaded, and every delay increases the risk of German discovery.

Searching for answers, Stagg identifies a brief break forming between storm systems. It will be short, but it may provide the opportunity the Allies need. During a final meeting, he advises Eisenhower that June 6 offers the best chance to proceed. Conditions won't be ideal, but waiting could mean postponing the invasion for weeks.

With his commanders divided and no guarantee of success, Eisenhower realizes the decision is his alone. He orders the invasion to move forward. Across southern England, ships set sail for Normandy and thousands of soldiers embark on a mission that will change history.

The film concludes by showing how Stagg's forecast proved crucial to the success of D-Day. The brief break in the weather arrived largely as predicted, helping make the Normandy landings possible. Pressure tells the remarkable true story of how one little-known meteorologist helped shape the outcome of World War II.
