Plot Synopsis
Operating out of Los Angeles, a disciplined and elusive jewel thief named Mike meticulously plans his heists to avoid DNA evidence and violence, utilizing U.S. Route 101 for his escapes. During the interception of a diamond delivery involving decoys, he successfully secures $3 million in authentic gems but is left rattled after being grazed by a bullet. Although Mike cancels a subsequent job in Santa Barbara, his fence, Money, recruits a volatile young biker named Ormon to take his place.

LAPD Detective Lou Lubesnick identifies a connection between the diamond theft and a series of unsolved robberies, though his colleagues dismiss his theory of a single suspect. As Mike prepares for his next heist, he hires a hacker named Devon to gather intelligence on Sharon, a high-end insurance broker who feels undervalued at her firm.
Sharon's frustration grows when a colleague secures a major deal with the wealthy Steven Monroe. Meanwhile, after Ormon carries out the Santa Barbara robbery with excessive violence, Mike severs ties with Money, prompting the fence to task Ormon with sabotaging Mike's upcoming operation.

The isolated Mike begins a romantic relationship with Maya after a minor car accident. He soon discovers Ormon is tracking him; the biker eventually forces Devon to reveal Sharon's connection to Mike's plans. Despite Mike's attempt to recruit her, Sharon initially refuses to become an accomplice.

Following a high-speed pursuit, Mike confronts Ormon and warns him to back off after realizing Money sent him. Simultaneously, Lou—recently separated from his unfaithful wife—happens to join a yoga class taught by Sharon. His investigation leads him to the car used in the diamond heist, where a bloodstain matches Mike's juvenile records under his birth name, James.

After being passed over for another promotion, Sharon decides to collaborate with Mike, demanding $3 million for providing intel on Steven Monroe's illicit $5.5 million cash purchase of diamonds for his wedding at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Lou, suspended for refusing to participate in a police cover-up involving another thief, continues his pursuit of Mike by tracking down his foster mother.

When Ormon brutally interrogates Sharon, she turns to Lou for protection, confesses her involvement, and quits her job. Sensing Mike's secrecy, Maya ends their romance when he admits he plans to leave the city.

At the Beverly Wilshire, Mike infiltrates the security detail as the diamonds arrive, unaware that Lou is acting as the courier. As they deliver the briefcase to Monroe and his fiancée, Mike attempts to seize the cash at gunpoint, but Lou reveals his identity as an officer. The confrontation is interrupted by Ormon, who appears disguised as a hotel worker and wounds Monroe. Mike kills Ormon to save Lou, and the detective allows Mike to flee without the money.
Lou subsequently uses evidence of Monroe's financial crimes to coerce the couple into supporting a cover story that frames the deceased Ormon for all of Mike's previous robberies.
