Plot Synopsis
In a flashback sequence, Emperor Shao Kahn conquers Edenia for Outworld by killing King Jerrod during Mortal Kombat. He subsequently claims Queen Sindel as his consort and Kitana as his daughter.
Years later, as the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament approaches, Quan Chi follows Shao Kahn's commands to resurrect Kung Lao and Kano. While Kung Lao is revived, Kano's inherent corruption prevents Quan Chi from controlling him.
In Earthrealm, Lord Raiden and Sonya Blade attempt to recruit actor Johnny Cage as their fifth champion to join Liu Kang, Jax Briggs, and Cole Young, though Johnny initially declines.
During the tournament's opening round, Sonya kills Sindel in combat. Meanwhile, Johnny is teleported to fight Kitana; she defeats him but defies Shao Kahn by sparing his life. Kitana is revealed as a spy for Raiden, leading to a confrontation with her bodyguard, Jade. Simultaneously, Quan Chi retrieves Shinnok's amulet from Kano.
Using the amulet, he and a revenant Kung Lao siphon Raiden's power and bind it to Shao Kahn, granting the Emperor immortality. In the second round, Liu Kang is forced to kill Kung Lao after a failed redemption attempt. Jax defeats Jade but spares her, mirroring Kitana's earlier mercy toward Johnny. Cole successfully wounds Shao Kahn, but the Emperor's injuries heal instantly, and he kills Cole.
Seeking a way to neutralize the amulet, the remaining Earthrealm champions—Liu Kang, Jax, Sonya, and Johnny—seek out the Takartans. After Johnny earns the trust of their leader, Baraka, the group is led to a secret entrance beneath Shao Kahn's palace. As Kitana is publicly imprisoned following her capture by Jade, the champions attempt to seize the amulet.
However, Shao Kahn kills Jax and captures Liu Kang and Sonya for the next round. Kano eventually betrays Outworld and informs Johnny that the amulet is held by a resurrected Bi-Han in the Netherrealm. Raiden uses his remaining strength to transport Kano and Johnny there to destroy the artifact.
In the tournament's final stage, Shao Kahn delivers a fatal blow to Liu Kang. Realizing he is not the prophesied chosen one, Liu Kang transforms into fire and vows to save those who have fallen. Although Sonya manages to liberate Kitana, she is knocked unconscious by Shao Kahn, who secures Outworld's victory. Kitana joins Earthrealm as their newest champion and engages Shao Kahn in single combat.
In the Netherrealm, Johnny and Kano join forces with a reformed Jade and the spirit of Hanzo Hasashi to defeat Bi-Han and shatter the amulet. Stripped of his immortality, Shao Kahn is executed by Kitana, who becomes the Queen of a liberated Edenia.
Following the Emperor's downfall, the surviving heroes—Johnny, Sonya, Raiden, Kitana, Jade, Kano, and Baraka—prepare to utilize a captured Quan Chi to retrieve their deceased allies.
