Official Trailer: ‘Moana Live Action’ (2026)
Plot Synopsis
Long ago on Motunui, a Polynesian island, the residents revered Te Fiti, the living island goddess of nature who utilized a powerful pounamu stone as her heart to breathe life into the ocean. The course of history altered when Maui, the master of wayfinding and shape-shifting demigod of the wind and sea, stole this heart to bestow the power of creation upon humanity. This theft led to Te Fiti's disintegration and triggered an assault on Maui by the volcanic demon Te Kā, resulting in both the heart and Maui's magical fishhook being lost to the ocean depths.

A millennium later, the ocean selects Moana, the daughter of Motunui's chief Tui, for the critical mission of returning the heart to Te Fiti. Despite her parents, Tui and Sina, attempting to restrict her to the island to train as its future leader, a severe blight strikes Motunui sixteen years later, devastating crops and severely reducing the fish supply. When Moana proposes venturing past the protective reef with her pet pig, Pua, to investigate the crisis and locate fish, her father firmly forbids it.

Moana's attempt to navigate past the reef fails when she is overcome by the powerful tides and shipwrecked. Later that day, her grandmother Tala guides her to a hidden cavern filled with ancient ships, revealing that the people of Motunui were once active voyagers until the ocean became perilous following Maui's theft of the heart. Tala warns that the spreading darkness from Te Kā is destroying their home, but explains it can be stopped if Moana finds Maui and convinces him to restore Te Fiti's heart. Entrusting Moana with the heart, which the ocean had previously given her, a dying Tala urges the young girl to set out on her quest to locate Maui.

Embarking on a camakau from the hidden cavern, Moana unintentionally brings along her dimwitted pet rooster, Heihei, who had stowed away. After surviving a fierce typhoon, they are shipwrecked on a remote island where Moana encounters the boastful Maui. Although she commands him to return the heart, he refuses, traps her inside a cave, and flees on her vessel. After escaping her confinement, Moana confronts the demigod, who grudgingly allows her aboard, and the two subsequently work together to outsmart the Kakamora—coconut-clad pirates seeking to claim the heart.

Convinced that Maui can redeem himself for the curse he brought upon the world, Moana persuades him to help restore the heart, though he insists on first recovering his lost fishhook from Tamatoa, a massive coconut crab residing in Lalotai, the Realm of Monsters. Using herself as a distraction, Moana enables Maui to reclaim the hook, but he struggles to control his shape-shifting abilities and is nearly defeated until Moana's quick thinking facilitates their escape. As they grow closer, Maui shares that his tattoos commemorate a difficult past—having been abandoned by his human parents as an infant before the gods pitied him and granted his powers—and with Moana's support, he successfully masters his shape-shifting while teaching her the art of wayfinding.

Upon reaching Te Fiti's island, they are fiercely attacked by Te Kā, and Moana's refusal to retreat results in Maui's hook becoming critically damaged. Fearing the permanent loss of his weapon, Maui leaves Moana behind, prompting a despairing Moana to ask the ocean to choose someone else for the task. The ocean accepts the heart back, but the supportive spirit of Tala appears, inspiring Moana to embrace her true destiny; she retrieves the heart and returns to face the volcanic demon. A remorseful Maui returns to aid her, sacrificing his hook completely to buy her time, which allows Moana to realize that Te Kā is actually Te Fiti herself, corrupted by the loss of her heart. With the ocean parting to clear her way, Moana restores the heart to Te Fiti, who immediately purges the blight from the islands, forgives a repentant Maui by repairing his fishhook, and restores Moana's boat before transforming back into a peaceful island.

After bids of farewell to both Maui and Te Fiti, Moana returns home to a joyful reunion with her parents. Commemorating the moment by placing a shell atop the traditional stack of stones left by past leaders, Moana embraces her destiny as the island's new chieftess and wayfinder, guiding her people back to the open seas alongside Maui to resume their ancestral voyaging.
