Official Trailer: ‘The Dink’ (2026)

Plot Synopsis

The Dink follows Dusty Boyd, a former child tennis prodigy whose promising career ended after a humiliating televised defeat against Andy Roddick. During the match, Dusty injured his wrist, and he has spent the years since blaming the injury, Roddick, and nearly everyone else for the direction his life took.

Now an adult, Dusty works as a tennis instructor at the struggling country club owned by his father, Chuck. Like Chuck, Dusty considers tennis a serious and prestigious sport while dismissing the increasingly popular game of pickleball as an embarrassing imitation.

Dusty’s life changes when he aggravates his old wrist injury while trying to prove that he can still compete on the tennis court. A doctor tells him that continuing to play tennis could permanently damage his wrist and recommends pickleball as a gentler form of rehabilitation. Dusty initially refuses, but with few other options, he reluctantly visits a local pickleball court.

There, Dusty meets Candace, an enthusiastic and experienced player who becomes his doubles partner. Dusty begins with an arrogant attitude, mocking the game and the people who play it. However, he quickly discovers that pickleball requires more skill than he expected.

After several embarrassing defeats, he begins learning the game properly and gradually becomes part of the welcoming community surrounding it. Candace encourages him to stop treating every match as a judgment of his worth and to enjoy playing simply for the sake of having fun.

At the same time, Chuck becomes increasingly angry about pickleball’s growing popularity. The country club is losing members, but the pickleball courts are attracting new customers and may be the only thing capable of saving the business.

Chuck refuses to accept this because he believes embracing pickleball would betray the traditions of tennis. Dusty becomes caught between earning his father’s approval and supporting the people who have helped him rediscover his love of competition.

The conflict leads to a major pickleball tournament that could determine the club’s future. Dusty and Candace enter together, eventually advancing through a series of unusual and comedic opponents.

During the tournament, Dusty encounters Andy Roddick and realizes that the match he has obsessed over for years was never nearly as important to Roddick as it was to him. Dusty finally understands that the defeat did not ruin his life; his refusal to move beyond it did.

By the end, Dusty stops playing to prove himself and begins playing because he genuinely enjoys it. Chuck accepts that the club can support both tennis and pickleball, allowing the business to survive. Dusty reconciles with his father, embraces his new community, and finally lets go of the childhood failure that had defined him for decades.
