Plot Synopsis

In Massachusetts, the Owens family has lived for generations under a curse cast by their ancestor Maria Owens: any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is doomed to die. Sisters Sally and Gillian believe they have finally broken the curse, but their hopes are shattered when Sally’s second husband, Gary, dies shortly after their marriage.

Devastated, Sally turns away from magic altogether and casts one final spell on her daughters, Antonia and Kylie, erasing their memories of magic in the hope that ignorance will protect them from the curse.

Years later, Sally and Gillian’s aunt Jet follows a raven omen that leads her to the Book of Raven, an ancient text containing instructions for breaking Maria’s curse. However, several crucial pages remain magically sealed. Knowing that her own death is near, Jet leaves the book and a note for her sister Frances, asking her to continue what she started.

Kylie and Antonia return home for Jet’s birthday, joining Sally, Gillian, Frances, and Jet for the celebration. Soon afterward, Jet dies, and the family gathers at the Owens house for her wake. There, Sally and Gillian meet Kylie’s boyfriend, Gideon. That night, Kylie tells Gideon that she loves him. The following morning, he is struck by a car and left in a coma.

Convinced that the Owens curse is responsible, Kylie confronts Sally about the rumors she and Antonia heard growing up. Pressured by Gillian, Sally finally admits that their family possesses magic and that she deliberately hid their heritage from them. Furious that Sally left them unprepared for the curse, Kylie steals the Book of Raven and searches for a way to save Gideon.

Visions from the book lead Kylie to England. Sally and Gillian follow, and Frances advises them to seek out Ian Wright, a professor who specializes in magic. They discover Ian trapped by a curse and manage to free him. The next day, Ian helps Sally remove the magical block she placed on herself years earlier, restoring her abilities and allowing her to sense Kylie’s location.

Kylie arrives in Thornfield, the English village where Maria Owens was born, and begins searching for the ruins of Lockland Manor. There she meets Tom Bailey, who offers to help her break the Owens curse and save Gideon. Tom reveals that Maria’s mother, Hannah Owens, once worked as a servant for Lord Lockland and was later burned as a witch on the manor grounds.

Sally and Gillian soon arrive in Thornfield with Ian. Sally finds herself increasingly drawn to him, though she remains wary because Ian is also originally from the village. When Sally senses that Kylie is in danger, the three trace her to Tom’s house. Inside, they discover evidence that Tom has been practicing dark magic and learn that he was once Ian’s apprentice.

Realizing Ian may have been keeping information from them, Sally and Gillian knock him unconscious and rush to the ruins of Lockland Manor. There they find Tom performing a ritual designed to steal Kylie’s magic.

Tom reveals that he is descended from Hannah Owens’s second child, who was fathered by Lord Lockland. That branch of the family was cut off from magic, and Tom has spent his entire life trying to reclaim the power he believes was stolen from him. He was also responsible for cursing Ian and stealing Ian’s Raudskinna, using both to manipulate Kylie and draw the Book of Raven back to Thornfield.

Sally, Gillian, and Kylie join hands and form a magical circle around Tom. Drawing on the strength of their blood bond, they overpower and destroy him.

Afterward, Sally and Kylie reconcile. The sealed pages of the Book of Raven finally open, revealing the true price of breaking Maria’s curse: a witch must willingly sacrifice her own life.

Sally apologizes to Ian before returning home with Gillian and Kylie. When Frances learns what the book requires, she quietly chooses to make the sacrifice herself. With Jet’s spirit watching, Frances walks into the river and gives her life, finally bringing Maria Owens’s centuries-old curse to an end.

One year later, Kylie and Antonia have fully embraced their magical heritage. Kylie and Gideon marry, now free from the threat of the curse. During their wedding reception, Sally reunites with Ian and shares a kiss with him, finally allowing herself to love without fear.
