Heart of the Beast opens with a wounded German Shepherd named Odin standing alone on a remote road in Alaska. A young woman driving a pickup truck stops when she sees him blocking the road, but before the film explains how he got there, the story jumps back one week.

Odin belongs to James Belmont, a retired Army Special Forces veteran who served alongside him in combat. Both are physically and psychologically scarred by their military service. Odin has a prosthetic front leg and titanium teeth from injuries he suffered overseas, while James experiences his own bouts of post-traumatic stress. The two have retired together and remain almost inseparable. James takes Odin in his seaplane to a remote part of Alaska for a quiet camping and fishing trip. During their first night, an older kayaker arrives at their campsite and shares a few beers with James. Their conversation reveals more about James and Odin’s years together in the military and the injuries they survived.

The following morning, worsening weather convinces James to cut the trip short. While flying home, however, James suffers a heart attack. He loses control of the plane, crashes through the trees and plunges into a lake. James escapes the sinking aircraft and discovers that Odin, who was thrown from the plane during the crash, has survived but is injured. After getting the dog stabilized, James retrieves what supplies he can from the wreckage, including aspirin to help manage his heart condition. With no way to contact anyone, he determines that the nearest road is roughly 60 miles away and begins walking with Odin toward civilization.

Their journey becomes increasingly difficult as they move through forests, marshland and mountainous terrain. Both suffer nightmares and flashbacks to their time in combat, with James repeatedly calming Odin when the dog becomes overwhelmed by memories of the war. Their food supply also begins disappearing despite James hanging the rations above the ground at night. At one point, they encounter a grizzly bear. Rather than attacking, Odin stands his ground against the animal until it finally retreats, allowing the pair to continue

One of their most dangerous obstacles comes when they reach a canyon cut by a raging river. James attempts to cross using fallen trees stretched above the water. He makes it across first, but Odin is frightened and struggles to follow. James goes back to help him and falls into the river. Odin survives the crossing, while James is swept downstream and badly injures his arm. When Odin eventually reaches him, the dog helps drag James out of the water. James discovers that his forearm has been badly broken and forces the bone back into place before splinting the injury himself. Despite his worsening condition, the two continue toward the road.

With only about eleven miles remaining, Odin becomes agitated during the night. James decides they should keep moving rather than remain at camp. They soon realize that a pack of wolves has been following them. The same pack had earlier been seen killing a young moose, and it now surrounds James and Odin. The two fight back together, but James is repeatedly bitten around the abdomen and Odin is injured as well. They survive the attack, but James has lost a significant amount of blood and is rapidly growing weaker.

James and Odin continue through the mud and wilderness until they finally reach a ridge where James can see the road in the valley below. Realizing that he is unlikely to make it there himself, James writes a letter for whoever eventually finds Odin and places it inside the dog’s gear. He explains that Odin is a retired military combat dog, describes the commands he understands and leaves instructions for caring for him. He also leaves money for Odin’s future care and asks whoever finds him to give the dog the peaceful life he was never able to have during his years of service.

Too weak to continue, James lies down with Odin beside him. The two spend their final night together beneath the Northern Lights. By morning, James has died from his injuries. Odin remains beside his body and howls before finally leaving to complete the journey alone.

Odin eventually reaches the road, bringing the story back to the film’s opening scene. The woman in the pickup cautiously approaches him and discovers James’s letter tucked into his harness. After reading it and understanding what Odin has survived, she takes him with her. Odin looks back toward the wilderness one final time before climbing into the truck, leaving James behind and beginning his new life.
