The opening text explains that, for the past three years, premarital sex has been outlawed in the United States as part of an effort to preserve traditional values under what is known as the "Chastity Mandate." There is, however, one exception: a single night each year known as the 12-hour Exemption Period. A company called Rexton Labs has provided everyone with wrist tattoos that change color when the annual period begins.

In New York City, on the day of the Exemption Period, Owen runs a pizza shop called Claremont’s. He plans to spend the night with his girlfriend, Malika, but when they meet at a sushi restaurant, she tells him that she intends to sleep with someone else in their building. Meanwhile, Allie is a singer who records songs for commercials. She goes out with her friend Jacinta in search of decent guys to hook up with, but Jacinta quickly meets a prince named Tejan and abandons Allie to spend the night with him. Allie returns to her apartment, where her roommate Arya gives her a sexier dress to wear.

Owen goes to his mother Linda’s apartment to complain about Malika, but Linda tells him she needs him to leave so she can spend the night with her partner, Rick. Owen and Allie unexpectedly run into each other on the street and have a meet-cute, but the moment is ruined when Owen vomits up the sushi he just ate. He wanders onto a film set and interrupts a scene between two actors before eventually heading to a bar. There, Owen strikes up a conversation with the bartender, Skye, who agrees to hook up with him after her shift ends in 30 minutes.

Owen races around the neighborhood looking for a condom, but every store is completely sold out. Allie goes to a bar, where she encounters a parade of creeps and strange characters before finding a man who plays “All Out of Love” on the piano with her. They make out in a closet before Allie agrees to have sex with him. The pair eventually end up at the same convenience store, where they discover the last condom available, displayed for an outrageous $200.

Both attempt to withdraw money from the ATM but fail. Allie then attaches the display to her date’s motorcycle so he can yank it out of the store. Owen joins her in making off with the display. They stop to settle who gets the condom by flipping for it, only to accidentally drop it down a drain. They manage to retrieve it, but Owen ultimately lets Allie have it.

Owen receives a notification from a dating app from a woman named Sophie, who invites him to meet her in the park. When Owen arrives, Sophie tricks him into allowing her to tie him to a tree, where she proceeds to rob him. Meanwhile, Allie goes to her date’s apartment, but before they can have sex, the police burst in. Allie tries to hide while half-naked, but the officers explain that they are only after her date, who has repeatedly violated his parole by having sex outside the Exemption Period.

Allie is taken to the station to speak with a detective before eventually being released. Owen also ends up at the station after the police locate him, but he manages to recover his belongings after Sophie is presumably apprehended. Once they leave the station together, Owen and Allie continue bantering and prepare to go their separate ways. However, they overhear three people discussing plans to attend a wild party and secretly follow them in hopes of finding the location.

When they arrive, Owen and Allie are picked up by a van and transported to the party. The bouncers initially refuse to let Owen inside because he comes across as too “thirsty,” while Allie is welcomed in. A woman named Vivian notices Owen and convinces the bouncers to allow him inside. At the party, Allie spots an artist she admires, Ezra Stone. He approaches her, Owen, and Vivian, and after discovering that Allie is a singer, they convince her to take the stage and perform “Only You.” Her performance is met with enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.

Owen leaves with Vivian, intending to sleep with her, while Allie decides to pursue Ezra. Ezra takes Allie back to his apartment, where he attempts to impress her by singing while naked and standing on top of a piano. His performance goes horribly wrong when he falls and smashes his face. Meanwhile, Owen makes the mistake of bringing Vivian back to his mother’s apartment, where Linda and Rick catch the two of them together.

The awkward encounter immediately kills Vivian’s interest. Allie leaves the hospital after dealing with Ezra and eventually ends up at Claremont’s, where Owen has also retreated. Owen makes a cheese pizza for them to share, and the two talk about the things they miss about casual sex. As they begin to realize that they are developing genuine feelings for one another, Owen receives a call from Malika, who has changed her mind and now wants to be with him. Owen decides to go back to her.

Owen returns to Malika, but after only a few moments, he realizes that he has made a mistake. He goes to Allie’s building hoping to find her, but she is not there. When Allie eventually returns home, she learns from Troy, the kid across the street whom Arya is babysitting, that Owen had been there calling out for her and mentioning all the things he had learned about her throughout the night. Allie realizes she knows exactly where Owen will be. She finds him waiting by a lighthouse, remembering that she had previously mentioned how much she liked them.

Owen has coffee waiting for both of them, and they finally admit their feelings and kiss. They climb to the top of the lighthouse, knowing there is still time left in the Exemption Period, but ultimately decide that they would rather wait another year. Outside, they kiss again, only to discover that they have accidentally wandered onto the set of a commercial for psoriasis medication featuring Allie’s cover of “Brave.” The director instructs them to kiss for the commercial, and they eventually break into a dance.

One year later, Allie and Owen are still together. As the next Exemption Period begins, they jokingly debate what they should order for dinner before heading into their bedroom, finally ready to seal the deal.
