In 1982, aspiring novelist Denise Platt lives on Oak Street in the suburbs with her husband, Greg, their daughter Audrey, their son Brian, and their dog, Starbuck. Their marriage is strained, with Denise privately considering divorce while Greg, having lost his regular job, secretly works as a pizza delivery driver.

One day, Denise notices and photographs a mysterious plant that has suddenly appeared in a neighbor's yard. At the library, librarian Mrs. Valcourt identifies it as a species that went extinct millions of years ago. An unexplained pile of animal excrement also appears in another neighbor's yard, while radio broadcasts report increased solar-flare activity.

During a storm, Greg returns from a pizza delivery when a massive white light suddenly engulfs Oak Street, accompanied by a shift in atmospheric pressure and a power outage.

The next morning, Denise and Greg leave the house to search for Starbuck, who has disappeared. They discover that Oak Street is now surrounded by a prehistoric landscape, with dinosaurs emerging from it and killing people throughout the neighborhood.

Back home, Audrey theorizes that the flashes of light were wormholes that transported the entire neighborhood millions of years into the past. That night, Greg admits he knows Denise has been considering divorce and confesses that he lost his regular job and began delivering pizzas because he was too ashamed to tell her.

Meanwhile, Brian spots Starbuck outside his bedroom window and goes outside to find him, with Audrey following. Denise and Greg then leave to search for their children. Brian and Audrey encounter Jeannette Christiansen, Brian's neighborhood crush, whose parents have been killed by dinosaurs, and bring her along.

Elsewhere, Denise and Greg witness another flash of light and follow it to a house containing a wormhole. However, they refuse to leave without their children, causing them to miss their chance as the wormhole disappears. When a herd of dinosaurs pursues them, they take shelter in a car, reconcile, and eventually reunite with the children.

The following morning, an Allosaurus attacks the group, and Greg is killed while protecting the others, who manage to escape. They discover the wormhole again above Mrs. Valcourt's house and make their way to the roof. There, they learn that the wormhole appears and disappears at regular intervals. Jeannette jumps through it and vanishes, but when Brian attempts to follow her, he misses the opening and falls.

A pterosaur grabs him, but Starbuck suddenly appears and attacks the creature, saving Brian. The group seeks refuge inside Mrs. Valcourt's house, only to discover that it is infested with dinosaurs. Mrs. Valcourt emerges from hiding and manages to kill one of the creatures before being killed by the others. The group escapes back onto the roof and successfully jumps through the wormhole.

They return to 1982 and discover that they have arrived in their own neighborhood on the same night Oak Street originally vanished, roughly twenty minutes before the event. Denise warns the residents to evacuate before the white light appears and arranges for Greg to make his next pizza delivery to a distant bus stop.

When Greg arrives, Denise and the children embrace him. Moments later, the white light appears again, engulfing the suburb as Oak Street disappears and is replaced by the prehistoric landscape.

Two years later, the military has contained the area while scientists study the prehistoric environment and its wildlife. Denise has published a book titled The End of Oak Street, chronicling her experiences.
