In 2008, 34-year-old Ella McCay, the lieutenant governor of an unspecified state, abruptly became governor when her mentor, Governor Bill Moore, resigned to accept a cabinet post. Ella inherited the office for the final fourteen months of Moore's term.

Though ambitious and idealistic, Ella faced unpopularity within her party due to her lengthy speeches and proactive political style. Her personal life soon presented a crisis: a reporter threatened to blackmail her over her use of a vacant government flat for lunch-break trysts with her husband, Ryan, a use she later learned constituted a misuse of government property.

Seeking respite at her Aunt Helen's bar, Ella encountered her estranged father, Eddie, who had previously caused chaos in her life by cheating on her deceased mother, Claire. Eddie claimed his new girlfriend, Olympia, prompted him to reconnect, but Ella dismissed him for his lack of remorse.

At her inauguration, Ella's failure to thank Ryan during her long speech offended him. She quickly focused on her legislative goal: passing a bill to support new and expectant mothers, thereby benefiting their children. Meanwhile, Ryan confessed to leaking the information about their liaisons to the press. Disturbed, Ella sought advice from Helen, who starkly described Ryan as a "ticking time bomb."

Ella also visited her 20-year-old brother, Casey, a bookmaker who had been living in self-imposed isolation for a year since abruptly cutting ties with his girlfriend, Susan, after she hesitated when he declared his love. Casey complained that Eddie and Olympia were leaving him intrusive messages. Ella urged him to reconcile with Susan.

To preempt the leak, Ella held a press conference where she admitted to the scandal and offered restitution, which resulted in a slight bump in her approval ratings. Later, she confronted Eddie at his apartment, demanding he stop harassing Casey. Eddie offered a insincere apology for his paternal failings. When Ella directly asked if he had cheated on Claire while she was dying, he responded, "Not really." Concurrently, Casey and Susan awkwardly met at her apartment, beginning to rekindle their relationship.

Ryan, furious that Ella had acted without consulting him, confronted her. He revealed he had bribed the reporter with a $7,500 check, which Ella recognized as potential evidence of extortion. Ryan then demanded a staff position or threatened to leave her and slander her reputation. Interpreting his blackmail as a sign of his lack of love, a heartbroken Ella refused. Ryan subsequently held his own press conference, announcing their separation, blaming Ella for the marriage's collapse, and falsely claiming she had tried to pay off the reporter.

Party officials convened at Helen's bar, pressuring Ella to either resign immediately or face censure for the rest of her term. Following Bill's advice, Ella countered by threatening to run for re-election as an independent, which would siphon votes from her party. The majority leader reluctantly agreed to pass her bill on the condition of her resignation. Ella resigned just three days after her inauguration. When Eddie asked if she had accepted his weak apology, Ella replied, "Not really."

In the fallout, Helen tipped off the police about Ryan's extortion, leading to his arrest. Casey and Susan's relationship thrived, and Casey began to leave his apartment. Ella started a non-profit organization providing legal aid to impoverished families, finding a way to achieve greater good outside the political sphere.
