The story opens in 1999, during what should have been a quiet wedding rehearsal in a small El Paso chapel. The Bride—once part of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad—has tried to leave her violent past behind and start a new life with her fiancé, Tommy Plympton. But the peace shatters when Bill, her former lover and the Vipers’ leader, storms in with the rest of the squad. They ruthlessly slaughter everyone in the chapel. As the Bride lies bleeding on the floor, she reveals to Bill that she’s pregnant with his child. Moments later, he puts a bullet in her head.

Miraculously, she survives, albeit in a coma. After four years lying comatose, Elle Driver—another Deadly Viper—sneaks into the hospital to finish the job. Bill stops her at the last moment however, calling it dishonorable to kill a helpless opponent.

Eventually, the Bride awakens to discover she’s lost her child. Feeling both devastated and furious, she kills a would-be rapist and the hospital worker who’d been exploiting her while she slept. She then steals the worker’s truck and sets off on a relentless path for vengeance against Bill and every remaining Deadly Viper.
Her first stop is the quiet suburban home of Vernita Green, who has traded her assassin history for a simple family life. Their knife fight crashes through the kitchen just as Vernita’s young daughter walks in. The fight pauses, but when Vernita tries to shoot the Bride with a hidden pistol, the Bride throws a knife straight into her heart. Before she leaves, however, she looks the little girl in the eye and tells her that, if she grows up wanting revenge, she’ll be waiting.
A couple of months earlier, preparing for this mission, we are shown that the Bride had traveled to Okinawa, Japan. There she sought out Hattori Hanzō, a legendary swordsmith who had sworn never to make another weapon. But when he learns that Bill—his former student—is her target, he breaks his vow and crafts a sword he considers his best work.
The Bride’s next target is O-Ren Ishii, who now commands Tokyo’s criminal underworld. O-Ren’s rise was built on revenge of her own: as a child, she tracked down the yakuza boss who murdered her parents and killed him.
The Bride follows O-Ren to a restaurant in Tokyo. In a shocking entrance, she slices off the arm of O-Ren’s lawyer and confidante, Sofie Fatale. Then she takes on O-Ren’s personal army, the Crazy 88, massacring them all.
She kills O-Ren’s schoolgirl bodyguard, Gogo Yubari, and finally faces O-Ren herself in a serene, snowy garden. Their duel ends when the Bride scalps O-Ren with a single strike. With her dying breath, O-Ren compliments the craftsmanship of the sword that killed her.
Before leaving, the Bride tortures Sofie for information about the remaining Vipers and cuts off her other arm. Bill later finds Sofie and learns the most important detail of all: the Bride has no idea their daughter is still alive.
Meanwhile, the death of Gogo Yubari ignites a fierce desire for revenge in her sister, Yuki Yubari. Yuki tracks the Bride all the way to America, leading to a wild suburban chase. Armed with everything from submachine guns to Uzis, Yuki unleashes a furious assault. The confrontation ends violently, with the Bride once again surviving through sheer skill and willpower.
Later, four years after the massacre in El Paso, the Bride—now known by her real name, Beatrix Kiddo—has already killed O-Ren and Vernita. She then goes after Bill’s brother, Budd, at his rundown trailer home. But Bill has warned him. Budd shoots Beatrix with rock salt as she approaches, drugging her and burying her alive. He then calls Elle Driver, offering to sell her Beatrix’s priceless sword.
A flashback reveals that Bill once told Beatrix about Pai Mei, a legendary martial arts master whose infamous Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique is said to be instantly lethal. He claimed Pai Mei would never teach it. He later took Beatrix to Pai Mei’s temple, where she endured brutal training until she earned the old master’s respect. That training saves her now: inside her coffin, she uses the techniques Pai Mei taught her to break free and claw her way back to the surface.
Elle arrives at Budd’s trailer with a suitcase full of cash—and a hidden black mamba. When Budd opens it, the snake strikes, killing him. Elle calls Bill and claims that both Budd and Beatrix are dead. As she leaves, Beatrix ambushes her. During their fight, Elle admits she murdered Pai Mei by poisoning his food after he plucked out one of her eyes as punishment for her disrespect. Enraged, Beatrix gouges out Elle’s remaining eye and leaves her screaming in the trailer with the black mamba.
Beatrix then travels to Acuña, Mexico, where the retired pimp Esteban Vihaio reluctantly helps her find Bill. When she finally reaches him, she is stunned to see her daughter—alive, four years old, and living with Bill. After spending an emotional evening together, Bill shoots Beatrix with a truth-serum dart and asks her why she left him. She explains she walked away from the Deadly Vipers for the sake of their unborn child. Bill confesses he believed she was dead at first, and later acted out of jealousy and fear.
Their final confrontation is brief but intense. Beatrix disarms Bill by trapping his sword in its scabbard, then strikes him with the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique—something Bill thought Pai Mei would never teach her. Bill accepts his fate, walks five steps, and collapses.
Beatrix leaves with her daughter, ready at last to begin the life she had been denied.
