Plot Synopsis

Millie Calloway is hired as a live-in maid for the wealthy Winchester family in Great Neck, Long Island. The Winchester matriarch, Nina, shows Millie to her new room, located in the attic. The room has one window, which cannot be opened and is on the exterior. Millie begins to notice that Nina is mentally unstable, and soon finds out from the neighbors that Nina once attempted suicide and had tried to drown her daughter when she was a toddler.

Later, Nina asks Millie to book non-refundable tickets for a Broadway weekend for herself and her husband, Andrew, only to later deny the request and claim she is unavailable. Secretly, Millie agrees to attend the play with Andrew instead. After the play, Millie discovers a barrage of angry texts from Nina.

She goes to Andrew’s room to show him the messages, which leads to them sleeping together. Nina discovers a Playbill upon their return, sparking a fight that culminates in Andrew telling Nina to leave, and he and Millie begin living together as a couple.

The film then shifts to reveal that Nina is relieved to be leaving, detailing her past in a letter to her daughter. Early in their marriage, following an argument over her hair, Andrew lured Nina into the attic storage room (later Millie’s bedroom) and locked her in.

He demanded she pull out 100 strands of her hair as a condition for her release. Andrew later fabricated evidence to make it appear as though Nina had attempted to drown her daughter and then commit suicide by overdose. Nina was subsequently institutionalized and forced to confess falsely before being allowed to leave.

Back in the present, Millie accidentally breaks the china she is using while preparing breakfast. Andrew dismisses the incident, and Millie collects the unwashed broken pieces in a plastic bag. Andrew later locks Millie in her room as punishment for not washing the broken china. When Andrew returns to the room to reconcile, Millie stabs him in the neck. She manages to lock him inside the room during the ensuing struggle.

Meanwhile, Nina returns to the house, intending to rescue Millie before leaving for good. Seeing a light on in the attic room, she unlocks the door, and Andrew attacks her. Millie intervenes, pushing Andrew over the edge of a spiral staircase, which proves fatal. To disguise the murder, Nina unscrews a lightbulb and drops it on his body, staging the death as an accidental fall while changing the bulb.

During the subsequent investigation, a policewoman, who is the sister of Andrew’s first fiancée, notices inconsistencies in Nina’s account but chooses not to investigate further. Later, Millie attends another housemaid interview. The interviewer reveals Nina recommended Millie, strongly suggesting she wants Millie to murder her husband.
