Plot Synopsis

Alma Olsson, a Swedish-American in her forties, has dedicated her entire life in the US to achieving her current standing. She is on the cusp of becoming the youngest tenured professor in Yale's history. Her only rival is her good friend, Henrik, a man she deeply admires for his intelligence and good looks, seemingly having everything in his favor.

The story introduces Alma and her husband, Frederik, a nearly invisible psychoanalyst, during a dinner at their home. Also present is a group of Alma's most valued students, among whom Maggie, a young, mouse-like girl, stands out. Maggie is deeply fixated on Alma, viewing herself as Alma's protégé.

Her primary ambition is to impress Alma, and while the other students resent their teacher's pet dynamic, they are powerless to change it. Maggie's dissertation, widely whispered to be Yale's best in two decades, is generating electric anticipation as she readies for her presentation to Alma in a matter of days.

At the party, Maggie excuses herself to use the bathroom. She then proceeds to snoop through every cabinet, including a nondescript one filled with toilet paper. There, she discovers an envelope. Upon opening it, a cascade of secrets—secret information about Alma's past that she wished to keep hidden—falls to the floor. Maggie wants to leave the party, and despite Alma's concern about her walking home alone, Maggie assures her that Henrik will go with her.

The following morning at school, Maggie approaches Alma, her expression signaling a life-altering revelation. Maggie privately reveals that Henrik raped her after walking her home and going inside for another drink. She wants to report the incident immediately, surprised by Alma's hesitancy. Alma believes Maggie but warns that proving such allegations is difficult and could cause more pain than resolution.

The following day, Henrik presented a revised account. He claimed that after reading Maggie's dissertation, he discovered it was almost entirely plagiarized. He alleged that when he confronted her, she became agitated, he returned home, and awoke the next morning to the false rape allegations.

Henrik confronts Alma, warning her that complications are imminent and assuring her he "won't tell anyone" about their affair. This places Alma in a difficult situation. The sensible choice would be to discreetly and openly support Maggie, who has begun to disclose the rape to those in authority. However, Alma believes Henrik's account. Furthermore, acting against him could jeopardize her safety.

Things escalate for Alma after Henrik is fired. Just as she thinks she's in the clear, articles emerge online where Maggie accuses Alma of being an unsupportive professor who doubted her story. Alma must now clear her name and protect a long-held secret from her past, a secret she suspects Maggie may have uncovered.

Alma's health and mental state decline as she struggles to comprehend her situation, leading to overwhelming guilt, fear, and uncertainty. Even five years later, Alma, Maggie, and Henrick are still tormented by their shared past, their lives irrevocably altered by their involvement in the 'feud.' The film concludes with a director shouting "Cut" as it fades to black.
