Gabriel, a low-ranking 'budget' guardian angel, is tasked with preventing car crashes caused by texting and driving. However, he yearns to save true lost souls. His attention is caught by Arj, who works odd jobs, part-time at a hardware store, and lives in his car. Intrigued, Gabriel begins to observe Arj over several days.

Arj begins a romantic relationship with Elena, a coworker. He then encounters Jeff, a wealthy tech investor, and persuades him to offer a position as his assistant. Arj excels in his new role, and, following Jeff's suggestion, takes Elena to a lavish restaurant. When the bill exceeds $300, Arj pays using Jeff's company credit card. The following day, Jeff confronts Arj and terminates his employment.
Arj's night takes a turn for the worse when the app he uses for odd jobs bans his account and his car is towed due to unpaid parking tickets. Witnessing Arj at his lowest, Gabriel appears and offers a glimpse into Arj's future, hoping to inspire him. Unimpressed by the seemingly ordinary and bleak vision, Arj expresses a desire for the wealth and success of someone named Jeff. Gabriel insists that adopting Jeff's life won't solve Arj's issues and, to prove his point, switches their lives.

The following day, Arj wakes to find himself a wealthy tech investor, having acquired all of Jeff's assets, while Jeff is now his assistant. Arj's former life is forgotten by everyone. Gabriel attempts to convince Arj that wealth is not all it seems, but in reality, being rich has resolved all of Arj's difficulties.

Martha, the leader of the angel order, discovers Gabriel's actions. As punishment, she strips him of his wings and informs him that Arj must agree to switch lives back with Jeff. At a party, Gabriel confronts Arj and restores Jeff's memories. The three discuss the situation, and Arj eventually consents to return to his original life after a few more days. Jeff now needs to find a source of income, and Gabriel, having no other place to go, joins him.

In this new life, Arj attempts to persuade his girlfriend, Elena, to accompany him on a trip to Paris. However, Elena refuses due to an important union meeting. Arj dismisses the meeting's significance, upsetting Elena, who then leaves. Later that night, while texting Elena, Arj crashes his car and lapses into a coma. Displeased with this outcome, Martha fires Gabriel and transforms him into a human. She offers to reinstate him if Arj unequivocally agrees to switch lives back with Jeff.

Jeff is struggling financially, barely making ends meet with his food delivery job and unable to secure stable employment. This forces Gabriel to work as a dishwasher. Gabriel is initially enthusiastic about his first paycheck but quickly becomes disillusioned upon learning about taxes and witnessing a coworker's struggle to survive on three jobs. Weeks later, Arj awakens from his coma, but feigns amnesia when confronted by Jeff, pretending not to recognize him.
Jeff plans to infiltrate Arj's house during his birthday party to steal his valuable watch collection. At the party, Arj recognizes Elena, working as a caterer, and they share a dance. Elena confides that wealth isn't her ambition; she prioritizes fighting for her beliefs, even if it doesn't bring riches. Later that night, Jeff's attempt to steal the watches is thwarted when Arj shoots him, dropping his memory loss pretense in a moment of panic.

Arj, Jeff, and Gabriel reconcile at the hospital. Arj agrees to switch lives back with Jeff, but Gabriel intervenes, stating the switch won't occur because Arj's decision stems from guilt, not genuine desire. Afterward, the three spend the day swimming at Arj's house. Martha visits Gabriel there, reaffirming her confidence in his success. Later that evening, the trio encounter Elena and her friends, and they all go to a salsa dance club together.
Outside the club, Arj confesses his fear of returning to his old, struggling life and facing the unknown. Gabriel reassures him by sharing his own post-transformation fears, yet highlights the worldly pleasures and love he has since embraced. Comforted by Gabriel's words, Arj agrees to switch lives with Jeff. Arj is returned to the moment his car was towed, and Jeff is transported back to his normal life.

Arj's life takes a positive turn, exceeding Gabriel's initial predictions. Jeff covers Arj's impound fees and, during a board meeting for a food delivery app he'd invested in, insists on improved benefits and higher pay for the app's workers. Arj and Elena's romantic relationship continues to flourish, seemingly under Gabriel's watchful eye.
