Plot Synopsis

Annually, a walking contest known as "The Long Walk" is held in a dystopian America under totalitarian rule. Teenage participants, called "Walkers," must maintain a minimum speed of three miles per hour. Failure to do so results in execution after three warnings, although one warning can be removed for each hour walked without incident. The contest concludes when only one walker remains, who then receives a substantial cash prize and one singular wish.

Raymond "Ray" Garraty wins a lottery to compete in the contest, arriving at the starting point to join 49 other walkers, including Peter McVries, Stebbins, Arthur Baker, Collie Parker, Gary Barkovitch, and Hank Olson. The Major, the contest's leader, announces that the walk's purpose is to motivate the country's productivity, a goal achieved in previous contests.

On the first day, Garraty establishes a close bond with McVries and gets to know the other contestants. Within a few hours, Curley, a fellow walker, is the first to be executed after slowing down due to a leg cramp. Later, Barkovitch provokes Rank, leading to Rank's execution. The other walkers ostracize Barkovitch, with McVries expressing clear animosity by repeatedly labeling him a killer.

As the walk continues, Garraty shares his motivation for participating in the contest with McVries: the Major executed his father in front of him and his mother for teaching banned ideas and refusing to pledge allegiance to the government. Garraty plans to win the contest, wish for a carbine, and assassinate the Major.

However, McVries dissuades him from seeking revenge, explaining that he has been walking his entire life, never knowing his deceased parents and enduring abuse from his adoptive uncle. McVries states that when he tires, he will simply stop walking and sit down.

As the days pass, more walkers are executed for various reasons, including injuries, escape attempts, stopping for too long to relieve themselves, or moving too slowly due to fatigue or insomnia. Olson, in a state of delirium, attacks the soldiers and is shot, left to bleed out as a warning to others. The following morning, the remaining boys discover Olson was the only married man among them and agree that the winner of the walk should send money to his wife.

Burdened by guilt over Rank's death and growing despair, Barkovitch pleads with Garraty to join their group. Garraty agrees, but Barkovitch soon commits suicide. This leaves only Garraty, McVries, Stebbins, Arthur Baker, and Parker. Stebbins, now severely ill, tries to persuade the remaining walkers to cease helping each other, arguing that with so few left, it's futile. As they pass through a town, Garraty sees his mother in the crowd and is nearly executed for trying to reach her until McVries intervenes, forcing him to continue the walk.

Parker steals a guard's rifle, shoots him, and then, to avoid bleeding to death, shoots himself. Baker develops internal hemorrhaging and chooses to stop walking, leading to his execution. Stebbins's health deteriorates, and he confesses to Garraty and McVries that he is one of the Major's illegitimate children, and his desire was to be accepted into the Major's household. Stebbins acknowledges his inability to continue the walk due to his condition and expresses to the others that it was an honor to walk with them before stopping and being executed.

With a massive crowd looking on, Garraty and McVries, the final two walkers, enter a town. McVries deliberately halts, sitting down to allow Garraty victory. Garraty, noticing this, lifts McVries and urges him to continue. McVries resumes walking, oblivious that Garraty has stopped, having sacrificed himself for McVries. The Major executes Garraty, then congratulates McVries on his win. When asked his prize, McVries requests a guard's carbine. Upon receiving it, he shoots the Major dead and continues down the road.
