Plot Synopsis

In a quiet South Dakota town, a Ghost Shirt, a deeply significant artifact for the Indigenous Lakota people, holds immeasurable symbolic value. While it's priceless to them, others, especially the unscrupulous antiquities dealer Roy Lee Dean, see it as a valuable commodity. Currently in the possession of the wealthy Pendleton Duvall, the shirt becomes a target when Dean hires local thug Dillon to steal it. The theft unfolds violently during a discussion at Duvall’s house, leading to a bloodbath.

The shirt's allure extends beyond Dean, attracting several others with their own motivations. Mandy views it as her escape to a new life, a path that will force her to confront a painful past. Her son, Cal, murdered her abusive ex-boyfriend with an arrow. Penny Jo, a diner waitress with a stammer but big dreams of becoming a country singer, learns of the impending theft. She enlists Lefty, a straightforward regular customer, to help her steal the shirt, intending to use the proceeds to move to Nashville.

Also vying for the shirt is Ghost Eye, the leader of a local Native American resistance movement. Determined to reclaim the shirt by any means, they are aided by Mandy's young son, Cal. His pronounced obsession with Native American culture leads him to declare himself the reincarnation of Sitting Bull, though he's often advised to temper this pronouncement.

Mandy's return to her father's ultraconservative Wyoming compound draws all those pursuing the shirt to the same location, culminating in a deadly shootout over its possession.

Once the gunfire erupts at the Starr compound, casualties quickly mount. Ghost Eye and his Lakota freedom fighters are responsible for the deaths of Hiram Starr and his male associates/sons, while the oppressed Starr women fiercely defend themselves, eliminating others. Lefty sustains a soon-to-be fatal gunshot wound from Hiram himself but survives long enough to depart with Penny Jo.

Despite knowing his time is limited, Lefty manages to deliver almost his entire marriage proposal to Penny Jo. She appears more surprised by his final breath but ensures he receives a peaceful and proper ending, given her limited life experience. Penny Jo positions Lefty in a seated pose, covered with a blanket, a six-pack of beer beside him, gazing out at a stunning Western vista.

Lefty offers Penny Jo all the potential earnings from their ordeal so she can pursue her dream of becoming a singer in Nashville, notably without ever having heard her sing. He states that his only needs are good food, good beer, and good company, all of which he already possesses. Penny Jo then leaves him in what she believes is a comfortable and peaceful position. She drives to Nashville with the money, honoring his sacrifice by revealing her talent as a singer.

Ultimately, Cal Starr obtains the shirt during the final shootout. He instructs Penny Jo and Lefty to leave him at Ghost Eye's Lakota militia compound. There, he presents the ghost shirt to Ghost Eye, convinced he has proven himself a true Lakota warrior, if not Sitting Bull reincarnated. To Cal's dismay, Ghost Eye accepts the shirt but simply shakes his head, denying Cal's request to join him in the compound.
