Plot Synopsis

Dr. Jumba Jookiba, on the planet of Turo, is facing conviction from the United Galactic Federation for his creation, Experiment 626, a ‘creature’ that is near indestructible with advanced learning capabilities. Jookiba is found guilty of his crimes and faces imprisonment, while Experiment 626 is exiled for his dangerous capabilities.

Experiment 626 manages to escape, however, stealing a Galactic Federation police cruiser and crash-landing on Kauaʻi, one of the main Hawaiian islands. 626 crashes near a wedding reception and is since run over by a trolley, before being taken to an animal shelter. The leader of the United Galactic Federation, the Grand Councilwoman offers Dr. Jumba Jookiba his freedom if he manages to retrieve and capture Experiment 626. She pairs Jookiba with deputized "Earth expert" Agent Pleakley.

Elsewhere on Kauaʻi, a girl named Lilo Pelekai, or Lilo for short, is being expelled from hula school because she pushed her bully, Mertle, off the stage. Lilo was frustrated with her sister Nani Pelekai’s absence. Later, Lilo and Nani’s social worker, Mrs. Kekoa, visits. She finds Nani unable to care for herself and Lilo, demanding Nani complete her suggested tasks within the week.

The very next day, Lilo and Nani’s neighbor Tūtū takes Lilo to the animal shelter after hearing she wants a friend. 626, realizing that Jookiba and Pleakely are likely hot on his tail, pretends to be a dog in order to get Lilo to adopt him. Later, Nani takes Lilo and her new ‘dog’ to her resort lūʻau waitress job along with her friend, David Kawena. Lilo later names Experiment 626 as Stitch, after Nani makes a comment about stitching the car seat that 626 tore. Stitch accidentally starts a table fire at the lūʻau, which leads to Nani getting fired.

Later, Nani is visited by Mrs. Kekoa, her social worker, and a man named Cobra Bubbles, a CIA agent investigating the arrival of experiment 626 who poses as a social worker. Mrs. Kekoa learns of Nani’s firing and insists she gets a new job immediately. But due to the antics of Lilo and Stitch, she keeps getting rejected during interviews.

Lilo later helps her sister get a job as a surfing instructor. While the two sisters surf together, Jumba and Pleakely attempt to capture Stitch while he jet skis. This causes the sisters and Stitch to wipe out, and Lilo nearly drowns while attempting to save Stitch.

Lilo is taken to the hospital. After her recovery, Mrs. Kekoa tells Nani that the Hawain government will cover Lilo’s medical costs, but she has to give up guardianship of Lilo. As the two sisters share one final night together, Stitch reflects on his actions that have led up to this point. He returns to the animal shelter alone.

The Grand Councilwoman is now very frustrated with Jookiba’s inability to capture 626. She cancels her promise and orders Pleskley to bring Jookiba back to prison. But Jookiba ditches Pleakley and decides to capture Stitch on his own.

Mrs. Kekoa and Bubbles arrive to find that Lilo has escaped from her bedroom. Along with Nani, the three search for her. Lilo finds Stitch at the shelter, but Jookiba arrives and captures Stitch. They escape to the Pelekai home and fight off Jookiba, leaving their house totally destroyed. As they fight, Jookiba tells Lilo that Stitch used her for his own protection, which leaves Stitch feeling guilty. He surrenders.

Jookiba takes Stitch aboard his spaceship and intends to wipe Stitch’s newly developed empathy. Lilo sneaks aboard the ship and frees Stitch and ejects Jookiba from the ship. It crashes into the ocean and leaves the two trapped underwater. Stitch rescues Lilo and allows her to float to the surface, but since he cannot swim to the surface, he drowns.

Nani, along with David, manage to rescue Lilo, but she refuses to leave without Stitch. Nani swims to the ocean floor and brings Stitch to the surface, but he remains motionless on the beach. David revives Stitch.

The Grand Councilwoman arrives later to arrest Jookiba, but after seeing what Stitch has become, she decides to let Stitch stay with Lilo and his new ‘ohana, or family. Mrs. Kekoa informs Nani that she can grant Lilo’s guardianship under David and Tūtū, which allows Lilo to stay home. The new family repair the house and live together happily.

Nani is now enrolled at the University of California in San Diego, where she is a student of marine biology, but frequently uses Jookiba’s portal gun to visit Lilo and Stitch.
